Course Description:
This course is designed for mental health practitioners seeking to strengthen culturally responsive practice with Two-Spirit, transgender, non-binary, and gender-expansive clients. Participants will examine colorism as a historical and racialized system and evaluate its intersections with gender identity, gender expression, sexuality, and psychological well-being.
The course explores how racialized perceptions of femininity, masculinity, beauty, desirability, aggression, softness, and safety can shape identity, belonging, relationships, and clinical experiences. Participants will identify manifestations of colorism within therapeutic contexts and apply culturally responsive strategies to recognize and address its impact in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives:
Describe at least 3 ways colorism can intersect with gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation within Two-Spirit, trans, nonbinary, gender expansive, and queer communities.
