Traineeships
Counseling Training Program
The Gender Health Center’s clinical internships and traineeships are the foundation of our counseling services, enabling us to provide affordable mental health care to individuals and families who may otherwise face barriers to access.
Our counselors are graduate-level trainees who are in the process of completing or have completed master’s degrees in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or Social Work. The Gender Health Center is one of the few institutions nationwide that offers intensive training in narrative therapy, with a strong emphasis on anti-oppressive, anti-racist, trans-centered, and decolonial praxis. Our clinical counseling program is highly competitive and rigorous, ensuring that trainees receive exceptional preparation for their careers.
Prospective trainees must submit a comprehensive application and complete an interview with our Mental Health Training Team before being considered for a placement. A background check is required, and we work closely with each trainee’s academic institution to ensure alignment with program requirements.
We offer a limited number of training placements and accept applications for Fall, Spring, and Summer cohorts. Traineeship commitments and expectations are outlined in our Clinical Placement Agreement.
Bachelor's Level and Generalist Internships
Our generalist student trainees provide necessary support to our administrative and counseling staff. Generalist trainees are completing their bachelor's degrees in social work. They provide advocacy and peer support group services (non-clinical) alongside community members. They also support our staff in the processes of grant-writing, social media management, fundraising, auditing GHC processes, intake procedures, and community outreach. Like our counseling traineeships, our generalist traineeships require an anti-oppressive, anti-racist, and trans-centering approach.
We accept applications for Fall, Spring, and Summer trainee cohorts. Our traineeship commitments are detailed in our placement agreement.
Supervision
If you are a licensed clinician (LCSW, LMFT, PSY) and are interested in joining our volunteer team of supervisors, please reach out to Ari Lozano (ari@ghcmail.org). Our volunteer clinical supervisor commitment is detailed in our supervisor agreement.
