Electrolysis Scholarship Creates Pathways to Gender-Affirming Careers and Permanent Hair Removal Access

The Gender Health Center Launches an Electrolysis Scholarship Program to Expand the Gender-Affirming Care Workforce

With the generous support of the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento and also community donors, the Gender Health Center is proud to announce a new Electrolysis Scholarship Program designed to support aspiring electrologists while increasing access to gender-affirming hair removal services.

As demand for accessible transgender healthcare, gender-affirming medical care (including permanent hair removal services) remains steady, there is an urgent need for skilled practitioners who can provide competent, affirming, and culturally responsive care. This scholarship invests in both the future workforce and the communities that depend on these essential services.

What Is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved permanent hair removal method available today. The procedure works by inserting a tiny probe into the hair follicle and using a precise electrical current to permanently destroy the follicle's ability to produce hair.

Unlike laser hair removal, which can reduce hair growth but does not permanently eliminate all hair, electrolysis provides lasting results and is effective on all skin tones and hair colors.

Because of its effectiveness and versatility, electrolysis is widely recognized as the gold standard for permanent facial hair removal, gender-affirming hair removal, and pre-surgical hair removal requirements.

Benefits of Electrolysis

  • FDA-approved permanent hair removal

  • Effective on all skin types and hair colors

  • Supports facial, body, and pre-surgical hair removal needs

  • Reduces gender dysphoria for many transgender and gender diverse people

  • Provides long-term results without ongoing maintenance treatments

For many transgender, nonbinary, and gender expansive people, electrolysis is an important part of aligning one's appearance with their gender identity and improving overall well-being and safety within communities.

Why Gender-Affirming Electrolysis Matters

Access to affirming providers can make a significant difference in a person's healthcare experience. Many transgender and nonbinary people discuss challenges in finding professionals who understand gender diversity, respect pronouns and identities, and create welcoming environments. Additionally, financial barriers can keep people from completing the full course of treatment that are critical to their health and quality of life.

With a need for gender-affirming electrolysis, communities in California face a shortage of trained practitioners. Building a workforce that understands and affirms people across the gender spectrum and provides affordable services is essential to improving access, reducing health inequities, and ensuring that community members receive care with dignity and respect.

Electrolysis as a Career: A Growing Opportunity

Electrolysis offers a unique and rewarding career path that combines technical expertise, healthcare services, entrepreneurship, and developing meaningful client relationships.

Licensed electrologists can work in:

  • Medical practices

  • Gender-affirming care clinics

  • Dermatology offices

  • Wellness and aesthetic centers

  • Independent private practices

  • Mobile or home-based businesses

As awareness of permanent hair removal grows and demand for gender-affirming services remains steady, qualified electrologists are entering a field with strong long-term potential and the opportunity to make a direct impact on people's lives.

For many practitioners, the most rewarding aspect of the profession is helping clients achieve greater confidence, comfort, and self-determination.

Making Electrolysis Training More Accessible

Despite the opportunities available in the profession, the cost of becoming an electrologist can create barriers for many aspiring students. Training program tuition, licensing fees, equipment costs, and other educational expenses can make it difficult to enter the profession without financial support.

The Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento and the Gender Health Center Electrolysis Scholarship Program is designed to help remove these barriers by providing resources that make professional training more attainable. By reducing financial obstacles, we hope to create pathways for people who may not otherwise have access to this career—particularly those from communities that have historically faced barriers to education and economic opportunity.

The Importance of Mentorship in Workforce Development

Financial support is only one piece of building a successful career. Mentorship, professional guidance, and community connection can be equally important for students entering a specialized field like electrolysis.

Through mentorship and relationship-building opportunities with licensed electrologists at eleQTrospot and other gender affirming providers in the area, scholarship recipients can gain insight into professional practice, client care, business development, and navigating the path from training to employment.

Supporting new practitioners in this way helps create not only skilled electrologists, but confident professionals who are prepared to provide high-quality, gender-affirming services.

Investing in the Future of Gender-Affirming Care

This Electrolysis Scholarship Program represents an investment in both people and community health. Every new electrologist who enters the profession increases access to permanent hair removal services. Every affirming practitioner helps create safer and more welcoming environments for transgender and gender-diverse clients. Every scholarship recipient contributes to a future where gender-affirming care is more accessible, equitable, and community-centered.

At the Gender Health Center, we believe that healthcare access and economic opportunity go hand in hand. By supporting the next generation of electrologists, we are helping strengthen a workforce that reflects our values of dignity, self-determination, and liberation.

We are excited to support aspiring electrologists as they begin their professional journeys and help build a future where everyone can access the healthcare services they need.
